About Wong Yun Yi

Founder of Embodied Therapy, SAC Registered Counsellor, Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner (SEP)

With 8 years of experience in counselling and psychotherapy, I support clients in their trauma healing through trauma-sensitive somatic approaches to complement traditional talk therapy. I help individuals with grief and trauma, who feel overwhelmed, anxious, or disconnected to find safety and inner peace. I’m passionate about Somatic Experiencing because I have witnessed how powerful it can be in guiding people back to themselves, and eventually to rediscover their authentic self that is not dictated by their trauma history.

How Somatic Experiencing can help you

Somatic Experiencing is a gentle body-centered approach to healing trauma, developed by Dr. Peter Levine. It is based on the understanding that trauma is stored in the body and can cause lasting physical and emotional distress. This innovative therapy helps people release and process trauma trapped in the body, leading to greater emotional balance and a restored sense of self.

Somatic Experiencing works by focusing on bodily sensations and the body’s instinctual responses. Trauma often leaves us feeling “stuck” in our physical experience, and this can show up as chronic stress, anxiety, emotional numbness, or physical tension.

In Somatic Experiencing, we will work with you to:

  • Tune into bodily sensations: By tracking these sensations, we can access the language of the nervous system and uncover areas of trauma that may still be held in the body; sometimes, even when we feel like we’ve gotten over something, our bodies are still holding on to the stress or trauma. Genuine regulation begins by tuning into the body’s subtle sensations, breath, and the rhythms of the nervous system.
  • Discharge trapped arousal: Using gentle techniques and a process of careful titration, we gradually help your nervous system regain resilience as we gently tap into areas of trauma that you would like to work on, avoiding overwhelm or retraumatisation. With time, Somatic Experiencing helps the nervous system release stored energy, allowing the body to return to a natural, healthy state of balance.
  • Facilitate integration and the feeling of wholeness: This happens when we begin to move from disorganisation to reorganisation and integration across different dimensions of us. As we do so, we may also discover new insights and clarity.

Why choose Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic Experiencing is ideal for individuals who are struggling with the lasting effects of trauma. If you’ve experienced any of the following, Somatic Experiencing may be a helpful approach:

  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Chronic stress or feeling “on edge”
  • Emotional numbness or detachment
  • Trauma from accidents, or sudden loss
  • Difficulty in relationships with others and self due to attachment/developmental/childhood trauma
  • Psychosomatic symptoms like chronic pain and tension that arise from stress

One of our clients shares their experience with Somatic Experiencing:

“From the very first session, Ms Yunyi created a warm space where I felt genuinely safe to open up without  fear of judgement or pressure. The conversations were always guided with kindness and care.

When we first started, I was in one of the darkest places of my life. In those moments where everything felt unbearable, her calm and gentle presence gave me something to hold onto. She didn’t rush me to be okay. She sat with me in the heaviness and held space for everything I was feeling.

Along the way, we also did somatic experiencing work together, and that process helped me connect with my body in ways I did not know of. For the first time, I began to notice where emotions would show up in my body and how to stay with them rather than push them away. That awareness helped me process things in a more grounded way.

She has a natural way of guiding one towards their own insights, while offering thoughtful and compassionate reflections along the way. Over time, our sessions helped me understand the patterns in my emotions and thoughts. I remember leaving each session feeling a little better and more at peace than when I’d walked in.”
