Traumatic grief happens when the loss of a loved one shatters your world unexpectedly—through accidents, illness, suicide, or stillbirths. Traumatic grief also can happen with a sudden and unexpected fallout with a friend or romantic partner. The pain of such a loss goes beyond sadness—it’s a shock that can overwhelm your entire life. The emotional turmoil can be compounded by symptoms of post-traumatic stress, making it feel like you’re stuck in an unending cycle of fear, confusion, and deep loss.

If you’re struggling with distressing emotions and thoughts like hypervigilance, intrusive thoughts, survivor guilt, or a sense of abandonment, this is normal after losing a loved one in a sudden and traumatic way. For many, this type of grief can also leave lasting emotional scars, like anger toward the people or circumstances that caused the death or even toward the loved one who passed.

It’s natural to feel a deep sense of confusion, and wonder if you will ever find peace again. Traumatic grief affects both your mind and body, but it can be healed with the right support.

At Embodied Therapy, we specialise in helping you process your grief and heal from the trauma that accompany the loss of a loved one. Our compassionate, trauma-informed approach is tailored to meet each individual’s unique needs, but here are some common areas that we could help with in grief therapy:

  • Reduce distressing PTSD symptoms like hypervigilance, flashbacks, and emotional numbness.
  • Build resilience and regain balance in your nervous system to feel calmer and more grounded.
  • Process guilt or anger you may feel, helping you release overwhelming emotions and find self-compassion.
  • Honour and remember your loved one’s legacy. For some survivors, there may be tension between yearning to reconnect with the loved one whom they’d lost and an impulse for avoidance of reminders due to the effects of trauma. We hope to unpack this tension with you, such that over time, how things had ended need not overshadow it all.
  • Make sense of who you are and create a sense of continuity between who you were before and after the loss.
  • Reconnect with yourself, rediscover joy, and find a renewed sense of purpose, as you continue on in your grief journey.

Grief has no timeline and may come in waves from time to time, but we will journey with you, help you find peace and reconnect with the life you deserve.

One of our clients shares her experience with Embodied Therapy’s grief therapy:

“Yunyi listens with patience and without judgment, giving me a safe space to share my deepest thoughts – thoughts that I couldn’t share even with those closest to me. Together, we’ve worked through my grief and struggles as a suicide survivor, and during the process, I have gained a different perspective on suicide. She has walked alongside me to identify my deep-seated issues and has taught me valuable, practical tools for managing anxiety and practicing self-care – tools that I apply in my daily life.”

FAQ

Will talking about my grief re-traumatise and make me feel worse?

At Embodied Therapy, we emphasise a compassionate and trauma-sensitive approach; therapy sessions will be aimed at guiding you at a pace that feels safe for you, especially when we approach difficult content that you wish to process together.

We strive to work with you to expand your window of tolerance over time such that you are able to access some of these difficult thoughts and emotions safely and in a contained manner.

Our grief therapy is also intentional about not rehashing/re-opening every wound, but to guide you and your body to feel safe in the here and now again.

How many sessions do I need?

This varies for each person and their goals for therapy. We have clients who feel better in a few sessions, while others may benefit from ongoing support.
